When sourcing stainless steel bars and wire rods across borders, the same material may appear under ASTM, EN, JIS or GB designations. Understanding how these systems relate helps avoid grade mismatches and speeds up quotation.
ASTM (e.g. A276, A580, A564) is product- and property-based: it defines the form (bar, wire) and mechanical/chemical requirements, often referencing a UNS number such as S31803. EN (e.g. EN 10088-3) uses a numeric steel name like 1.4462. JIS (e.g. SUS329J3L) prefixes "SUS" for stainless. The same physical alloy can therefore carry several labels.
Equivalent grades share composition ranges but may differ in tolerance, test method or supplementary requirement. For critical parts, specify the standard you will inspect against and request the MTC in that standard’s format.
